Which paper type is best for photo books — and why it matters?
Paper isn't just the surface your photos are printed on — it plays a huge role in how your memories are seen, felt, and preserved over time. At albumworks, we offer a carefully curated selection of premium, archival-quality papers, each designed to enhance both the print and the page-turning experience.
When we say “archival,” we mean papers that are acid-free and designed for long-term preservation. These papers are more resistant to yellowing, fading, and deterioration over time — making them ideal for keepsakes you want to last for generations.
You’ll also notice we describe paper weights in gsm, which stands for grams per square metre. In simple terms, the higher the gsm, the thicker and more luxurious the paper will feel. Our papers range from 150gsm for a light, elegant finish to 400gsm for thick, board-like Layflat pages.
Our most popular option is Photo Luster, a smooth, semi-gloss paper that reflects light evenly and makes colours pop without being overly shiny. It’s available with Hi Colour printing in 260gsm for a luxurious, substantial feel, or 190gsm for those who prefer a slightly lighter, more flexible page.
For our Classic Photo Books printed in Standard Colour, we offer a beautiful 150gsm Premium Silk paper with the option to upgrade to 190gsm Pearl, which has a gentle sheen and a refined texture.
If you’re after a tactile, soft matte finish, our Layflat Photo Books are printed on 400gsm E-Photo Lustre or Matte paper. These are high-end stocks that feel more like fine art board than traditional photo paper — thick, durable, and perfect for full-page images that span across a seamless spread.
Why does this matter? Because paper affects everything — from the sharpness of your images to how the pages turn in your hands. Thicker stocks add weight and presence to your book, while smoother finishes enhance photo detail. The right paper can elevate your project from something nice… to something unforgettable.
