In this article, we will share key photography tips for using an iPhone to take your photos to the next level. From understanding the importance of framing and composition, to adjusting focus and exposure, these tips will help you take stunning photographs that will be cherished for years to come. So, grab your iPhone and let's get started on capturing those special memories in beautiful quality.

Tip 1: When in doubt... point and shoot!

The best thing about smartphone photography is that much of the process is automated by our ubiquitous little devices, so when in doubt, just point and shoot! However, with the right knowledge you can take your photos to the next level.

Tip 2: Frame your image!

The frame is what you see inside the photograph. It’s best practice to exclude any unnecessary content or distractions and focus on the main subject. You can easily do this just by moving the camera or cropping things out by zooming in or out before taking the photo. Use your thumb and forefinger to pinch the screen to zoom in and out.

Tip 3: Composition – the Rule of Thirds!

Similar to framing, composition is where your subject(s) will be positioned within the frame. To make your photos really captivating, place your subject in the left or right third of the frame, leaving the other two thirds open for other important aspects, such as the background, to also stand out. This draws the viewer's eye all around the photo. You will be AMAZED by the results of this little trick.

To make positioning easier, your iPhone has a Grid Overlay setting on the camera. To turn it on, open your Settings App, scroll down to the “Camera' setting, then switch the “Grid” option to the “On'' position. The next time you open your camera app, the grid overlay will be visible. This also makes it easier for you to keep the horizon of your photos straight, which will make your photos more impactful.

Tip 4: Focus!

Okay, now that your photo is composed, you should tell the camera what to focus on. While the camera usually guesses quite well, it’s always best to use your finger to tap the screen over the subject that you would like to capture. It might be someone’s face, an object or an area of a landscape. This will correctly focus the camera on that point, but also, it will automatically adjust the exposure (brightness) to best capture the subject.

Tip 5: Exposure!

You usually won’t need to adjust the exposure manually, but in those rare circumstances you can tap on the screen, locate the “sun” icon next to the yellow focus box, then click and drag up or down over the sun icon, depending on how you would like to adjust the exposure. The exposure will adjust in real-time, so you can see what you'll be getting.

Tip 6: Hold Still and Shoot!

Be sure to hold your iPhone still and tap the “Shutter” button to capture your special moment.  With enough practice it will all soon become second nature, and you will have many more beautifully captured memories for your special albumworks Photo Books.
