Photography Tips - Simple Tricks to Improve your Photography Composition
JUNE 21ST, 2023
Ready to take your Photo Books from nice to amazing? It's simpler than you think. The key is photo composition. Whether it's a personal keepsake or a special gift, mastering this skill can take your photography (and your Photo Books) to a whole new level. Keep reading to uncover the simple tricks that will help your photos tell a more compelling story.
1. Rule of Thirds
Start off with this age-old trick that never fails to add interest to your shots. Picture your frame divided into nine equal sections by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. In fact many cameras now give you the ability to turn on a virtual grid. Try to position your main subject along these lines, or at their intersections. Doing this can instantly make your photo more balanced and engaging.
2. Leading Lines
Leading lines are the visual paths that guide the viewer's eyes through the photo. They can be anything from roads, fences, shadows, or streams, to architectural features. Use these lines to lead towards your main subject, creating a pathway that makes your image more dynamic and focused.
3. Framing
Another effective composition technique is framing. Using elements within your photo to frame the main subject can help isolate and emphasise it. This could be anything from a window frame, to an archway, or overhanging tree branches. Framing adds depth and layers to your shot, making it more intriguing.
4. Fill the Frame
Don't be afraid to get up close and personal with your subject. Filling the frame can highlight details, eliminate distractions, and make your photo more impactful. It's especially effective in portrait and macro photography.
5. Play with Perspective
Break the monotony by experimenting with different perspectives. Shooting from high above, down low, or at an angle can create unique, eye-catching compositions. Remember, photography is about creativity, so don't be afraid to think outside the box.
6. Use the Horizon Line
When a photo is level with the horizon line, it creates a sense of balance. Balance is great in photography as it creates stability for the viewer. You can see here an example of a balanced horizon line and an unbalanced version.
7. Embrace Symmetry
Symmetry in your photos creates harmony and balance that's pleasing to the eye. It's everywhere - in reflections, architecture, nature. Despite contradicting the rule of thirds, symmetry can transform your images, making them memorable and captivating.
8. Keep it Simple
Remember "less is more". Reduce clutter and distractions to let your subject truly stand out. A neutral, clean backdrop rather than a busy one, can make all the difference, focusing the viewer's attention where you want it.
